For Further Reading
Thought for your day #24, Tues 9/19/00.
Note from me to myself:
"Look, give these people a break. I mean, you're not quite like
the old Buddhist Zen teachers who would literally beat their students with a
stick until they bled, but that's probably just because you're on the Web. You really
expect a lot from these people....try to shatter their world view, teach them
that virtually everything their churches and government leaders tell them is
wrong, think you've covered all aspects of human interaction in less than 30
pages, and then don't give them anything else to follow-up with? Come on,
Give Em a Break!"
As a prelude, I must reiterate that all the ideas here are an extension of
what we learn about God and ourselves from His Name, YHWH. On the one hand
I don't want to repeatedly over repeat myself repeatedly, but it really does
bear constant emphasis:
Everything about you can be learned through researching your name. All
of your life and history can be "revealed" to the diligent researcher
who is equipped only with your name. So too God's Name, YHWH. And,
in a consistent, logical way, that Name is the essential factor needed to truly
understand human relationships.
So, if you haven't done so already, these 3 main documents about YHWH's Name
are essential:
A Simple Overview
God is Not God's Name
I Will Be What I Will Be
As to the rest? So OK. Here's a
"bibliography." Not one of those puffed-up so-called scholarly bibliographies,
where the author goes to the library and lists the name of every book he or she
finds even remotely connected to their topic.
No. This is a real bibliography. (If nothing else, I try at all
times and in all ways to be "real" in our dialogues.) These are
the books which have been most influential for me on these topics, which I
continually return to. And last time I checked, they are all still in
print.
- The Bible. I mean, really, folks. Forget about the silly
preachers and Sunday school and everyone else's interpretation of the
day....Have you actually read it? Parts of it have been around for
3,000 years! And we keep it around because so much of it is "way
cool." It has a lot to say which is amazingly pertinent
today. And if you want my recommendation, if you are really new to the
Bible skip ahead to First Corinthians. It's right after Romans.
Yes, it's all worthwhile, but if you start with Corinthians you will skip
the first 1,000 years of history and Jesus' life, the early Church records,
and start right in with Paul's version of "How Then Should We
Live."
- "Evolution's End" by Joseph Chilton Pearce. Next to the
Bible (and a few of the other sacred classics from the religions of the
world which I had best really not mention here because I'm trying not to
rock the boat for at least one day) this has, I really think, been the
single most important book in my life. If even 5% of this book is
true, then we do not live in the world we think we do. Not an easy
read, I will admit. The jacket text says it all: "A galvanizing
indictment of how we are sabotaging our children's development and our
society's future that will transform the way we think about our families,
schools and lives."
- "Restoring the American Dream" by Robert J. Ringer. Again,
the jacket says it best: "The American Dream was not about government
taking huge sums of money (under the label of "taxation") from
citizens by force. The American Dream was about individualism and the
opportunity to achieve success without interference from others. It is
time for Big Brother to get out of our private lives and off our backs - to
let go of the reins and allow us to control our own destinies."
- "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television"
by Jerry Mander. Everything he says is right.
- "The Age of Missing Information" by Bill McKibben.
"Witty, unsettling, and insightful, The Age of Missing Information is a
virtuoso argument for the notion that less is more. After reading it,
you'll never look at your television - or the world - the same way again.
- There is NO #6.
That's the list. Sorry if its brevity disappoints, but the substance is
more than you can imagine.
Those 5 books, coupled with a deeply religious understanding of YHWH's Name,
contain the seeds for the Kingdom of Heaven, here and now.
Let me know what you think.
