Moses Turned Aside

Something remarkable.  I  mean, astounding.  And I love it when this happens.

Recently, a passage in the Bible that I am intimately familiar with suddenly jumped off the page and took on a whole new and exciting dimension.

From Exodus 3, where Moses meets YHWH in the Burning Bush:

1 Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro His father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and He led the flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

2 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and He looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.

3 So Moses said, "I must turn aside now, and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up."

4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, "Moses, Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am."

5 Then God said, "Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

What is so amazing (and I am a bit astounded at how I never saw this before) is the parts I highlighted.

God was waiting to see if Moses would actually "turn aside" to look at the Burning Bush!  

You get the distinct impression (at least I do) that YHWH had been doing this thing with the bush for a while, but that nobody until Moses actually took the time to turn aside!

Well, wow......Just wow........(Isn't that articulate?)

What it says to me is:

The Angels are here.  YHWH has sent them out, and indeed the universe is a bush burning with glorious fire, a marvelous sight!  It is up to us to stop, turn aside from the hustle-bustle of our jobs and normal activities, and take the time to actually gaze at that marvelous sight.  Then, and only then, can we hear the Voice of YHWH. 

That's sacred vs. profane time.....Then we can recognize the common and "ordinary" for what they really are, "marvelous sights", by turning aside long enough to actually look at them.

Wives, husbands, parents, children, trees, sky, the glories of the heavens and the beauty of the earth....These all contain Angels, the Messengers from YHWH.

By turning aside from our daily cares for even a moment, with an open heart, we can, indeed, hear the Voice of God telling us that the very place we are standing, yes, even here, is holy ground!
